In Western Australia, a new tradition to celebrate World Mission Month has begun. Each year on 1 October, the feast of St Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Patron Saint of the Missions, pilgrims gather for the Kirup Camino, a one-day pilgrimage of prayer, reflection and solidarity.
Initiated three years ago by Shendelle Mullane, Catholic Mission’s Province Director for WA, this annual pilgrimage was inspired by her own Camino experience in Spain and is becoming a well-known and eagerly awaited event in the Diocese of Bunbury.
Pilgrims walk the 16km scenic trail between the small towns of Balingup and Kirup before gathering for Mass, celebrated by the Bishop of Bunbury, the Most Reverend George Kolodziej SDS, who will also launch Catholic Mission's World Mission Month Appeal.
The Kirup Camino reminds us that mission begins by walking together in faith and hope.
First held in 2024 with 25 pilgrims, the Kirup Camino welcomed more than 60 participants last year and raised over $1,000 in support of communities in Zambia.
"Each year, more people from across WA are undertaking the Kirup Camino, and this year we are aiming for 100 pilgrims to celebrate 100 years of World Mission Sunday. It is a beautiful reminder that when we walk together in mission, we can make a real difference for communities around the world,” shared Shendelle.
