Last Sunday, Bishop Edwin Mulandu celebrated the World Mission Sunday Mass at St Stephen’s Cathedral in the heart of Brisbane, gathering parishioners and friends of Catholic Mission for this special occasion dedicated to the missionary work of the Church.
“It was like a dream,” said Bishop Mulandu. “To celebrate World Mission Sunday Mass here in Australia is a great blessing. I thank God for this opportunity and for the spirit of unity that reminds us we are one Church, one family, wherever we are in the world.”
Visiting from the Diocese of Mpika in Zambia, Bishop Mulandu is the guest of honour of Catholic Mission this October. His visit offers Australian supporters a chance to hear first-hand about the life and faith of communities in his diocese, and how their generosity continues to bring hope and transformation. This same message was shared by Pope Leo in his special video message for World Mission Sunday, “When I served as a missionary priest and bishop in Peru, I saw firsthand how the faith, prayer and generosity shown on World Mission Sunday can transform entire communities.”
Bishop Mulandu’s journey began in Brisbane and will continue along the East Coast, with visits to Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, before travelling west to Perth to celebrate a special Zambian Mass with the local community. Throughout his travels, he is meeting with many friends and supporters, sharing stories that highlight how even the smallest act of kindness can have a profound impact on communities most in need.
“As individuals, we each have a mission,” Bishop Mulandu shared. “When we open ourselves to God and say, ‘Here I am, Lord, send me,’ He uses us to bring hope and change to others.”
To allow more people to hear Bishop Mulandu’s inspiring reflections, Catholic Mission will host a special online webinar, World Mission Month in Focus: Our Work in Zambia in Action, on Friday 24 October at 11.30 am (AEDT). During this event, Bishop Mulandu will share insights into key projects supported by Catholic Mission, including the Maize Mill initiative, a project empowering women and families to overcome poverty, and the Maternal and Child Health programs in Chalabesa and Chilonga, which are providing life-saving care for mothers and babies.
All are warmly invited to join this unique online event and be inspired by Bishop Mulandu’s message of faith, unity and hope in mission.
