Children like Yamikani can walk several kilometres to access education in rural Malawi – a journey made even harder living with a physical disability.

Yamikani’s* legs ache before the school day has even begun. The walk to Mangochi, his current school, is several kilometres - past busy dirt roads, in the heat, on legs made weaker by a physical disability.
Living in one of the most remote communities in Malawi, education is not a given. For some, the distance, cost, and resources required to attend school are deciding factors on whether attending school is even possible.
The struggle to reach school is only part of a larger story. In recent years, severe weather has displaced thousands of families, forcing them to resettle with nothing – and leaving education as the first thing to go.
In response, Fr Matthew Semba and the Church in Malawi are building St Peter’s Nyamikuta Primary School, so children in Kampira can access education close to home.
For children in Kampira, this school will mean no more long walks, no more missing out due to hunger or lack of resource, and a future that is within reach.
With the support of Catholic Mission, a new primary school - St Peter’s Nyamikuta - is being built close to where Yamikani and other families like his now live.
