Catholic Mission offers a unique Mongolia immersion for a small group seeking to encounter and accompany the local Catholic community in one of the world’s most remote and culturally distinctive countries. Once largely isolated from the outside world, Mongolia is home to a small but vibrant Catholic community. The country gained international attention during Pope Francis’ visit in 2023, when he encouraged the Church in Mongolia to continue reaching out to all people with God’s love, compassion and friendship. This immersion is an opportunity to touch the heart, engage the mind and nourish the spirit through encounters with people, culture, faith and the Church’s mission.
Based in Ulaanbaatar, participants will stay at Don Bosco College
and spend time with local Catholic communities and Catholic Mission projects. Participants will encounter the inspiring work of religious sisters and visit the Caring Centre, which supports children who have experienced abandonment and vulnerability. Time will also be spent experiencing aspects of Mongolian culture and daily life, providing participants with opportunities to listen, learn and share in the hospitality of local communities.
The detailed itinerary will be developed and finalised closer to departure in partnership with the local community. This ensures that the immersion responds to local circumstances and that our presence is respectful, appropriate and does not place an unnecessary burden on the people and communities who welcome us.
The immersion encourages participants to reflect deeply on faith, justice, human dignity, poverty, community and our responsibility towards others. Through daily prayer, reflection and group discussion, participants are invited to consider how their encounters in Mongolia challenge their perspectives and how the experience might influence the way they live and act when they return home.
The emphasis is not on sightseeing, but on encountering people, listening to their stories, experiencing their culture and walking alongside a young and growing Catholic community.
The group will be led by a Catholic Mission facilitator who will facilitate reflection and discussion throughout the immersion and help participants make connections between their experiences in Mongolia and their own faith and lives.
