Catholic Mission is delighted to offer students an Indigenous immersion experience on Larrakia Country and surrounding communities, led by one of our trained Catholic Mission facilitators. Through our long-standing relationships with communities, parishes and schools across Northern Australia, participants are welcomed into experiences that go far beyond tourism.
The immersion begins at Nungalinya College in Darwin, a unique meeting place for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here, students will learn alongside Indigenous teachers, exploring culture, art, spirituality and connection to Country. They will be encouraged to listen, ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the diversity and richness of First Nations cultures.
From Darwin, the immersion moves onto Country, bringing the stories and traditions of these places to life. Participants will camp on Limilngan-Wulna Country in the wetlands of the Adelaide River, using this as a base to explore Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. Along the way, they will experience the natural beauty of the land, visit significant places and learn about the deep spiritual connection First Nations peoples have maintained with Country for thousands of years. A special day trip to Wurrumiyanga on the Tiwi Islands will bring students together with local young people. Through sport, conversation and a shared BBQ, participants will have the opportunity to make connections, share stories and experience community life.
Throughout the immersion, each group will encounter its own unique experiences shaped by the people and communities we meet. Participants will be invited to listen, learn, build relationships and reflect on what they discover about Indigenous culture, spirituality, community and their own place within the Australian story.
This is more than a journey through the Northern Territory. It is an opportunity to step beyond tourism, encounter people on their own Country, hear their stories and develop a deeper appreciation of Australia’s First Nations cultures and their enduring connection to Country.
