Grounded in Catholic Mission’s immersion philosophy, the experience is centred on encounter, accompaniment, reflection and solidarity. Participants are invited to step beyond the familiar, listen to the stories of local people and communities, and gain a deeper understanding of the realities faced by those living on the margins of urban life. An immersion in Manila invites participants into the complexity, energy and vibrancy of one of Asia’s largest cities where, deep contrasts between wealth and poverty shape everyday life.
The program is delivered in collaboration with a Catholic university, local Church partners and a range of Catholic organisations involved in education, social outreach and community development. Participants encounter the lived expression of the Church’s mission in an urban environment, where faith is expressed through presence, advocacy, care and accompaniment of people in need.
Participants will spend time in a variety of community settings, including outreach programs supporting children and families experiencing poverty, initiatives caring for older people who have been abandoned or forgotten, and parish-based ministries responding to urgent social needs. These encounters provide an opportunity to look beyond statistics and develop a deeper understanding of the realities of poverty and inequality. Participants will learn how Catholic organisations and local communities work together to respond through relationships, practical action and a commitment to human dignity.
The immersion also provides opportunities to experience the rich cultural and spiritual life of the Philippines. Shared meals, prayer, liturgical celebrations and time with local Church communities allow participants to experience the warmth of Filipino culture and the central role that faith plays in community life with visits to significant historical and cultural sites.
Throughout the immersion, daily reflection, journalling and facilitated dialogue provide space for participants to process what they are seeing, hearing and experiencing. They are encouraged to reflect on questions of dignity, justice, poverty, inequality and their own responsibility as members of a global community.
The emphasis throughout remains on relationship, presence and learning through lived experience. Participants are not simply visitors to another country; they are invited to encounter people, listen to their stories and allow those encounters to challenge and broaden their understanding of the world.
