Meet Daniel and Joseph

Across Myanmar, ongoing conflict and instability are impacting the lives of millions of children. Families are being displaced, education is being disrupted, and young people are growing up surrounded by uncertainty.

Yet amidst these challenges, hope remains alive through the work of the Missionaries of St Paul (MSP), who continue to provide children with safety, education and the opportunity for a brighter future.

Daniel

This is Daniel. He is 17 years old. With his life only just beginning, he has already carried burdens unimaginable for someone so young.

Daniel's mother works long hours in a factory, while his father, weakened after an operation, is unable to work and stays at home. This leaves Daniel carrying the heavy pressure of helping support his family at an age when he should be focused on his education and future.

His parents made the difficult decision to send him to the MSP boarding hostel to give Daniel hope for a brighter future and the opportunity to become “an educated person.”

Now, Daniel lives at the boarding house, where he finally has the time and resources to learn. He has discovered a love for studying the Burmese language and continues to persevere in English and Mathematics, even though they are more challenging for him.

Thanks to the boarding school, Daniel has been able to discover what he is passionate about and dreams of one day becoming an engineer to help build things that last.

Joseph

Meet Joseph. While still young and making his way through fourth grade, his parents made the difficult decision to send him to live under the care of the MSP, knowing it would provide the best opportunity for his education.

Today, Joseph is growing in confidence and purpose. Each day on the farm, he cares for crops and animals with pride, nurturing a dream of one day becoming a farmer and supporting his family.

For many families, like Joseph’s and Daniel’s, sending their children to live under the care of the MSP at the boarding school is a difficult decision. Yet deep down, they know it offers the best opportunity to protect their children, provide an education, and empower them to pursue their dreams and build a brighter future.

This is what true hope consists of: not in trying to avoid pain, but in believing that even in the heart of the most unjust suffering, the seed of new life is hidden.

Pope Leo XIV

Since February 2021, the ongoing internal conflict across Myanmar has profoundly impacted the lives of children and families. Millions of young people are growing up surrounded by instability, displacement and uncertainty, with many unable to access education safely.

For more than 30 years, the MSP have stood alongside vulnerable communities through pastoral care, education and outreach to families affected by poverty and conflict. Through their boarding hostels, young people are given safety, stability and the chance to continue their education.

But today, this mission is under increasing pressure. Rising food costs and reliance on rented farming equipment mean the MSP can no longer accept additional children into their boarding hostels, despite the growing need.

To address this need, the MSP are expanding ecological farming initiatives – including growing and harvesting rice, beans and aquaculture across 20 acres - to strengthen food security, train young people in ecological farming, and support more resilient local livelihoods for generations to come.

In the midst of hardship and uncertainty, hope continues to grow through the strength of communities, the care of the Church, and the compassion of our supporters.
