Building on this foundation, the House of Mercy has continued to expand its reach and deepen its impact across Ulaanbaatar’s most disadvantaged communities. Since opening in June 2024, the centre has served over 48,000 individuals in need, becoming a lifeline for those experiencing homelessness and extreme hardship.

The House of Mercy in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, continues to be a powerful expression of the Church’s mission of mercy and compassion, serving people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and poverty in one of the city’s most disadvantaged districts.
Established by Cardinal Giorgio Marengo, I.M.C, Apostolic Prefect of Ulaanbaatar, and blessed in September 2023 by the late Pope Francis, the House of Mercy has quickly become a vital place of welcome and care. Guided by a commitment to dignity and inclusion, its services include healthcare, emergency relief, food support through a soup kitchen, clothing, bathing and laundry facilities, counselling, and family reconnection services, all delivered in a spirit of selfless service, gratuitous love, and a culture of compassion.
Services at the House of Mercy
The House of Mercy is open to the homeless every Tuesday and Thursday, providing consistent access to essential services including food, healthcare, and hygiene facilities. On these days, between 30 and 40 people come to access hot showers and laundry facilities, restoring dignity and basic comfort in their daily lives.
The medical clinic also sees around 150 visitors each month, offering basic medical treatment for wounds, infections, and routine care, while more complex cases such as heart and kidney conditions are referred to the hospital by Br Andrew Tran Le Phuong, SDB, who also provides financial assistance for those without insurance.
The soup kitchen serves approximately 100 people each day, ensuring reliable access to nutritious and filling meals for those most in need.
Through these integrated services, the House of Mercy continues to respond not only to immediate physical needs but also to longer-term health and wellbeing challenges, strengthening its role as a trusted place of care and compassion within the community.
