Hear My Voice... Believe this World Mission Month

Do you remember when Pope John Paul II gave his famous speech to the people of Alice Springs in 1986?

“The church invites you to express the living word of Jesus in ways that speak your Aboriginal minds and hearts, Jesus calls you to accept his words and his values into your own culture... The Church herself in Australia will not be fully the Church that Jesus wants her to be until you have made your contribution to her life and until that contribution has been joyfully received by others”.

As we celebrate World Mission Day on Sunday 23 October 2011 we are encouraged to hear the voice of our Indigenous brothers and sisters in Guatemala and here in Australia – to celebrate their Indigenous Catholic faith; their unique culture, language and spiritual traditions.

This 2011 World Mission Month, Pope Benedict XVI invites all Catholics around the world to go and proclaim the Gospel to all peoples – to stand in solidarity with them as part of the Universal Church.

Throughout Indigenous communities individuals are stepping up in the name of Christ to serve their brothers and sisters as they face incredible challenges. Guatemalan head catechist Don Pedro Xol Mucul and Australian Indigenous leaders Theordora Narndu, Angela Ninnal and Carmelita Perdjert all reach out to their communities, proclaiming the Good News in their own language.

Can you hear their voice of reconciliation, forgiveness and hope this World Mission Month?

World Mission Month Parish kit

The 2011 World Mission Month parish kit has been created to help celebrate World Mission Month in parishes around Australia on Sunday 23 October 2011.

The parish kit contains a range of useful information on this year’s World Mission Day Appeal theme, “Hear My Voice... Believe”. Throughout the kit you learn the inspirational stories of Indigenous spiritual leaders Don Pedro Xol Mucul from the diocese of Izabal in Guatemala and Theodora Narndu, Angela Ninnal and Carmelita Perdjert from the Northern Territory here in Australia.

The kit also contains extracts from Pope Benedict XVI’s message for this year’s World Mission Sunday, suggestions for prayers and readings, information about Catholic Mission and our work as well as insights on how you can effectively use the parish resources like the poster, DVD, appeal envelope and speakers to conduct a successful World Mission Day Appeal in your parish.

The parish resources including the parish kit are excellent formation and fundraising tools for your 2011 World Mission Day Appeals.

World Mission Month DVD

The “Hear My Voice... Believe” DVD takes us to two remote Indigenous communities, one in the Diocese of Izabal in Guatemala and the other in the Diocese of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Here we meet head catechist and local leader Don Pedro Xol Mucul and spiritual leaders Theordora Narndu, Angela Ninnal and Carmelita Perdjert.

Throughout this short film we learn how these Indigenous leaders reach out and serve their community in the name of Christ whilst proclaiming the Good News in their own language and culture.

This DVD is a great resource for your 2011 World Mission Day Appeals. It will educate parishioners about the work of Catholic Mission here in Australia and around the world and inspires them to hear the voice of Indigenous brothers and sisters.

World Mission Month Poster

212b_copyThe 2011 World Mission Month poster features Leon Gilbert and Clare Narburup, two Indigenous children from the Wadeye community in the Northern Territory. The image portrays the joy, dignity and pride of our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

The writing “Murrinh Nubingayepup Kathu” (pronounced ‘Moorin noobingayepoop kartoo’) is in the Indigenous language of Murrinhpatha, one of eleven languages spoken in the Wadeye area, and translates to “Hear My Voice”.

The striking poster image and the writing “Murrinh Nubingayepup Kathu” highlight the appeal theme “Hear My Voice... Believe” as parishioners are invited to hear the voice of our Indigenous brothers and sisters across the world and to hear God’s voice.
