Sleeping Area for the boys |
The boys sleep outside, underneath the verandah, and when it rains they sleep in the basement under the parish church which is next door, in the space that is used as a parish primary school during the week.
All of the boys are from the surrounding villages or slums, are poor, are mostly Hindu and Christian and are recommended as students by the local Parish Priest. The boys range in age and attend either the local Catholic primary or the nearby Catholic secondary school.
The town of Uthukottai is on the border of Andra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states with no major development to speak of. There is no transport from the surrounding areas and therefore the children need to board in order to study.
For the past ten years, the Refuge has been boarding children living in two small rooms, which have been taken over from the parish priest’s building.
There is land behind the school which they would like to use to build a proper dormitory for the boys. Our Lady of Refuge Boys’ Home in Uthukottai is now working to build a decent hostel for 100 boarders on this land.
It is with your help that these boys are receiving what they have now and what they can look forward to in the future.
Consider the parishes in the developing world, the priests, sisters and lay workers. Even a verandah is shelter for many children, giving them hope of a better, brighter future.
