Sister Barbara
As missionaries in daily life we are each called to "play our part"... to reach out to each other. To empower each other.
Missionaries working the grass-roots around the world need your support.
Right here in Australia, dedicated men and women are drawing upon a deep spiritual history connected to this land.
One of these people is Sister Barbara Tippolay who lives and works on the Tiwi Islands, just north of Darwin. She works alongside two other inspiring women - Sisters Gertrude and Dorothy.
Sister Barbara understands her people well and is adamant that now is the time to move forward from her past, in her community.
Raised and educated by missionary sisters, as a teenager Barbara was responsible for looking after the smaller children at the mission. She remembers one religious sister's empowering words:
"whenever you go out, hold yourself up, you're equal to anyone else."
Sister Barbara followed her strong calling to vocation and undertook her religious training in Papua New Guinea in 1950's where she lived and worked with the community for many years. In 1986 sister was elected Superior General of her congretation. Shortly thereafter, she moved back to Australia working in Cairns for several years before moving back to her birthplace on the Tiwi Islands to work with her own people.
Stopping a local child-care centre from closing, giving women a place at the local art centre to share their painful stories and find healing, and giving pastoral support for families of those who have taken their own lives, particularly difficult when living remote – this is the difference Sister Barbara and the other sisters on the Tiwi Islands are making.
With your support, we can provide the basics for missionaries such as a place to live, transport to travel to remote areas, and training to ensure essential pastoral and spiritual outreach to those most in need throughout the world.
