Kasongo's Story
Kasongo is a 13 year old boy infected by HIV/AIDS living in remote Kasanka, in northern Zambia. Kasongo tested positive for HIV/AIDS six years ago, he was only seven years old. When the sisters first met him he was severely malnourished, HIV positive and only just holding on to life.
Today you would be likely to find Kasongo in his local village, standing in front of a group of people holding up a small jar of tablets asking: “Do you know what these are?” Everyone knows of course that Kasongo has HIV/AIDS. The tablets are the antiretroviral medication that keeps him alive.
As part of his presentation Kasongo also asks: “How do you think I became positive?... I am only 13 years of age and I have not yet met a woman.”
Kasongo is determined to do what he can to raise awareness and reduce stigma. Through his courage and strength, he shares his story at schools and youth groups in the community – helping others affected by HIV/AIDS.
