Sister Dorothy Stang was shot and killed at point blank range by hired gunmen in Anapu, in the Amazon Rainforest, Brazil, in February 2005.
Sister Dorothy, or Dot, as she was called by her family, friends and most locals in Brazil, had been an advocate for rural communities in Brazil since the early 1970's, helping them to make a living farming small plots of land without deforestation.
Sister Dorothy had previously received death threats from loggers and land owners but this didn't deter her from trying to protect the people from criminal gangs.
Missionaries all over the world endanger themselves every day to help others.
Catholic Mission works with communities and supports these missionaries in their life-saving work in 160 countries.
Here is an update to Sister Dorothy's story from the United States, where her brother is continuing her cause. |
