Go On - Go Online and Support Our Every Day Heroes
26 Jul 2010

You can do it running a marathon or pounding the pavement in a walk-a-thon. You can do it at a morning tea, crazy hair day or the school bake off. You can even do in the office when you declare to your workmates your intention to lose a few kilos for summer.

Thanks to Everydayhero, fundraising for Catholic Mission has never been easier. If you are organising a ‘fun’ fundraising event that will assist Catholic Mission’s work consider going online and registering it with Everydayhero. Then tell your friends.

Whether you’re an individual, school, class or parish Everydayhero is designed to use the phenomenon of online social networking to help publicise your event and attract sponsors to your fundraising activity. At the Everydayhero fundraising website (www.everydayhero.com.au) you can  register your special event and nominate Catholic Mission as your cause. Once that’s done, simply build your profile and invite all of your friends to sponsor you.

Michelle Kermond, 30, a Year 3 teacher at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Bardon, Brisbane, is a Catholic Mission ambassador who shares her mission experiences with parishes in the Brisbane Archdiocese.  As someone who is constantly using the internet for study and for communicating with parents, colleagues and friends, Michelle’s suggestion is “Why not for fundraising too?”

“Whether it’s Facebook or Xt3 the big buzz today is social networking. For busy people who want to support Catholic Mission it makes a lot of sense to deal directly online with a single fundraising platform. That’s what I like about Everydayhero.” says Michelle.

Michelle’s recent trip to Timor-Leste brought home the good work Catholic Mission is doing there: “I saw many practical projects that are helping rebuild society. One that sticks in my mind is the funding of war orphans who are clothed and educated through Catholic Mission donations.”

“Timor-Leste was an incredible experience. You see the hardships, the poverty and spiritual richness side-by-side. It leaves you wanting to do more.”

“At Saint Joseph’s Primary School we organise Fun Runs and Patti Cake Fridays, Crazy Hair Days.” says Michelle. “Now I’m looking forward to organising a Catholic Mission team for the 2011 Gold Coast Half Marathon. That’s where I expect Everydayhero will be a big help in building our sponsorship base”.

Sponsors on Everydayhero can support programs in Timor-Leste and in other countries where Aussie missionaries are working, says Catholic Mission’s Brisbane Director, David McGovern: “The real heroes of Catholic Mission are those who dedicate their lives to helping the poor in Christ’s name.”

“When we think of heroes we think of amazing people like Sister Marie Bourke in Zambia, Sister Maureen Elliott in Ethiopia and Sister Maria Sullivan in Southern Sudan. They all deserve to be supported in their life-changing works.”
